Botox vs Xeomin: Choosing the Right Neuromodulator for You

Neuromodulators have become increasingly popular for cosmetic and medical purposes, with Botox and Xeomin being two of the most well-known options in the United States. Both products use the same active ingredient to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and treat various medical conditions. In this post, we will compare Botox and Xeomin, highlighting their similarities and differences to help you make an informed decision when considering these treatments.

Botox Cosmetic (OnabotulinumtoxinA):

  1. Reputation: Botox has a long history of successful use in cosmetic and medical settings. It has been around the longest. Often times, regardless of which neuromodulator treatment a patient receives, they call their treatment "Botox" because this has become a mainstream term although, in reality, it is a brand name for just one of the botulinum toxin A treatments that are available in the USA. Many patients do not know which neuromodulator they get.

  2. Complexing Proteins: Botox contains complexing proteins that may lead to an immune response in some individuals. This could potentially affect treatment efficacy over time. When you hear the term "resistance" or "building antibodies", this is what we are talking about. If you develop these antibodies, unfortunately, it may mean that none of the neuromodulators out there will be affective in future treatments.

  3. Onset of Action: The onset of action for Botox Cosmetic typically takes a few days. Full results are visible at 14 days.

  4. Duration: Treatment peaks from 2-6 weeks and then slowly wears off until 3-4 months.

Xeomin (IncobotulinumtoxinA):

  1. Purity Advantage: Xeomin is known as "A Smart Toxin" because it contains the same active ingredient as the other neuromodulators, but it is double filtered and purified. The complexing proteins have been removed and all that remains is the active component. Due to its purity, developing resistance is not a concern and the effects and duration are the same! You likely will not notice any difference in your results if you have tried one of the other neuromodulators previously.

  2. Safety Profile: Due to its purity, Xeomin is preferred by those concerned about allergic reactions or resistance to treatment.

  3. Onset of Action: Xeomin has a similar onset of action as Botox Cosmetic, with results becoming noticeable within a few days. Full results are visible at 14 days.

  4. Duration: Treatment peaks from 2-6 weeks and then slowly wears off until 3-4 months.

Choosing Between Botox and Xeomin:

When deciding between Botox and Xeomin, consider the following factors:

  • Experience and Reputation: Botox Cosmetic has a longer track record, however, Xeomin is gaining popularity for its potential advantages in terms of purity.

  • Allergies and Sensitivities: If you have concerns about allergies or immune reactions, Xeomin's purity may be appealing although allergic response to any of the neuromodulators is very rare.

Conclusion: Both Botox and Xeomin are effective neuromodulators that can help you achieve a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance. Both of these neuromodulators contain the same active ingredient, but Xeomin's purity is why it is Everbelle Aesthetics' preferred brand of neuromodulator. Our practice is almost exclusively Xeomin.
